Bebe Daniels

Bebe Daniels

Bebe Daniels was was born in Dallas in 1901 and hit the stage at the age of four in a production of Richard III. That was the beginning of a very successful career that included 234 (!) films. In 1931 she starred along with Ricardo Cortez in the first version of "The Maltese Falcon", also known as "Dangerous Female". She also is remembered for her starring role in 1933's "42nd Street".

And a bit of Bebe trivia. While in Chicago, several thousand dollars' worth of jewelry was stolen from her hotel suite. Al Capone, a longtime Daniels fan, put out the word that whoever stole the jewelry had 24 hours to return it. The jewelry was returned the next day.

Along with the film roles, she also had a successful career on the London stage, in radio and on early TV.

You think maybe Cher saw this card at some point?

Bebe Daniels - What do you think? Allure?

Interesting tidbit on Bebe Daniels and Al Capone. They are beautiful pictures. Loved the one of her by the fireplace!

I saw the photo and thought "geez she looks like Cher" and then I read your comment and it made me laugh. Maybe they are related WAY back.

Daniels was teriffic in coedy shorts where her natural talent was unrestrained. WHen the tlkies came along her ability to move was severly restricted. Her voice was not bad, but not great. Her Maltese Falcon is a disaster. Gret, clear photography, but she was a stiff. Cortez was awful, too. I think that is where the fireplace pic comes from. She was blond in thyat one. Looked washed up. Sad. The curly haired funny girl was not ready for sound drama. She was never a knockout, but she was great fun on the screen. Allure? No. Never had it. Appeal - sure, as a wonderful comedy player with some of the greats. Aside - Kirsten Dunst is very popular today: spiderman, etc. Very unique look. Not a stunner, just unique. In the Daniels Maltese Falcon, Spade's secretary is the spitting look alike image of Dunst. It's great.

Have seen the Daniels Maltese falcon and generally agree. Was also amazed at the resemblence of Spade's secretary to Ms. Dunst. Time passes. We think we are rather unique - and then we learn otherwise!
